  • A war chest is the required amount of PoE a flag must pay in order to declare a blockade on an island. The amount is based on the size of the island and the island's population, if any. * For outpost islands, the war chest is at least 25,000 PoE. * For medium islands, the war chest is at least 75,000 PoE. * For large islands, the war chest is at least 125,000 PoE. If the defenders of a colonized island win the blockade, they receive 25 percent of the war chest. The PoE is placed directly into the fort or palace coffers.

Shadow Wars is unlocked at the most basic tier, with subsequent tiers going up by silver, gold, platinum, and diamond. Each tier unlocks more rewards than the preceeding tier. The seasons themselves are not tied to ladder seasons, but rather to WCS events. Alerts will be generated on the web and in the game's client to let them know when a war chest season has begun. A portion of the proceeds from war chests will go toward StarCraft e-sports events and tournaments. The first war chest season will go toward increasing the prize pool for the 2017 WCS Global Finals over the base prize pool of $500,000.
