James Elwood, a computer programmer, replaces a computer programmer named Fred who cannot resolve a functional error in the office computer. Elwood fixes the problem, and later develops a romantic interest with a co-worker, Millie. After he proves to be romantically inept with a live female, he resorts to his computer (named "Agnes") for advice. However, the computer ends up giving Elwood bad advice which leads to Millie meeting and spending the evening with Elwood's romantic rival, another programmer. The next day, Elwood gradually realizes that "Agnes", the supercomputer he works on, has fallen in love with him and is losing logical control over its own functions.
