MILNET (an acronym for MILitary NETwork) was an unclassified, packet-switched computer network operated by the U.S. military. MILNET was created in 1984 by the Department of Defense when it split the ARPANET into two specialized networks: ARPANET that would continue its advanced research activities, and MILNET that would be reserved for military uses that required greater security. MILNET was later integrated into the Defense Data Network, which was created in 1982.
