He received his first Emmy nomination for his work on an episode of this series entitled "When the Fat Lady Sings", which guest-starred Theodore Bikel. In addition, he worked on such TV movies as Attica (starring Henry Darrow and Anthony Zerbe) and Carly's Web (starring Daphne Ashbrook, K Callan, Gregory Itzin and Cyril O'Reilly). Smith was also a hair stylist on the popular 1980 film The Blues Brothers (featuring Henry Gibson and Charles Napier). He later worked on two films that were directed and written by and starring Robert Townsend. The first was the 1991 musical drama The Five Heartbeats. This was followed by The Meteor Man in 1993, a science fiction comedy which co-starred Frank Gorshin, Tommy "Tiny" Lister, Jr., and Wallace Shawn and featured cinematography by John A. Alonzo. Both of these films featured appearances by Deborah Lacey.
