Only a pilot episode ("Rajah's Ransom") was produced, although 12 additional scripts were prepared, should the series be picked up. It featured the first non-comic book portrayals ever of Superboy and Lana Lang and stands as a forerunner of later series Superboy, which lasted four seasons and Smallville, which lasted ten seasons.
  • A television show running from 1988 to 1992, originally titled Superboy. The series revolves around a teenage Clark Kent juggling his life between his role as a student and his heroics as Superboy, the Boy of Steel. Despite high ratings, the series was canceled in its fourth season due to Warner Bros, who filed a lien in an effort to reclaim all Superman film and TV rights (Though Superboy was already a property of Time Warner, its distribution was handled by Viacom). Because of the number of different companies involved in its production, the show never ran again in syndication.

It was based on the popular Superboy comics created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. The 34 segments appeared as part of three different programs during that time, packaged with similar shorts featuring The New Adventures of Superman other DC Comics superheroes. These adventures marked the animation debut of Superboy, as well as his teenage alter ego Clark Kent, who acted as the bespectacled, mild-mannered disguise for the young hero. Krypto the super-powered dog would accompany his master on every dangerous mission. Other characters were featured, such as Lana Lang, the foster parents of the Boy of Steel; Pa and Ma Kent. The town of Smallville also made its animated debut. As a result of the production's budget, the show featured a great amount of stock animation as well as limited movement from the characters.

The series revolves around a teenage Clark Kent juggling his life between his role as a student and his heroics as Superboy, the Boy of Steel. If it sounds like Smallville, well, it is. At least in the first season. Clark and his future arch-foe Lex Luthor attend the same journalism school, and Lana Lang appears in a supporting role. The series soon underwent a major retool, owing to a recasting of Superboy; the college setting was dropped in favor of the The Bureau for Extra-Normal Matters, where Clark and Lana help investigate paranormal and alien activities. Despite high ratings, the series was canceled in its fourth season due to Warner Bros, who filed a lien in an effort to reclaim all Superman film and TV rights (Though Superboy was already a property of Time Warner, its distribution was handled by Viacom).
