The 1998 Bud Shootout was a Winston Cup (now Sprint Cup) exhibition race for the 1997 pole winners run on February 8 at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach Florida. Jeff Gordon dominated all race long, leading 15 of 25 laps. However, a late caution set up a last-lap restart, with Gordon leading followed by Rusty Wallace. When the race restarted, Gordon missed a shift and stripped his transmission trying to recover. When the race restarted, Gordon missed a shift and stripped his transmission trying to recover. This allowed Wallace to blow by, leading only the final lap en route to his first Shootout victory, taking the checkered flag over his brother Kenny. Second, the race was increased to 25 laps and was run as a single segment, and one two-tire pit stop was now required. Additionally, eligibilty changed as well. Starting in 1998, along with all of the previous seasons' pole winners, all winners from the previous seasons' second-round qualifying raced in the Bud Shootout Qualifier, which, like the main Shootout, consisted of a single 25 lap segemnt with a required two-tire stop.
