Japanese Movie Database lists 391 films released in Japan during 1963. The five major studios released 363 feature films this year, of which 182 were in color; 252 were gendai-geki, set in the modern era, and 79 were jidai-geki, set in historical times. Film critic Tadao Satō names as a significant Japanese release of the year, Shōhei Imamura's The Insect Woman. Imamura's film became a major influence on the new Pink film genre, of which 24 films were produced in 1963, the second year of the genre's existence. The modern yakuza film genre gained popularity in 1963, and surpassed the traditional jidai-geki over the next decade. This year NHK produced the first of its annual television Taiga Dramas: A Glorious Life (花の生涯 Hana no shogai).
