The Township of Norfolk was created in 1974 as part of the regional restructuring that created the Regional Municipality of Haldimand-Norfolk. It was formed through the amalgamation of the Townships of Houghton, Middleton, North Walsingham, South Walsingham and the Village of Port Rowan. On January 1, 2001, the Norfolk Township Fire Department was amalgamated with other area departments to form Norfolk County Fire and Rescue Services upon the creation of Norfolk County.
