He played sixty-one games in the National Hockey League with the Pittsburgh Penguins and Buffalo Sabres, scoring ten goals and adding six assists. He later played 219 games in the World Hockey Association with the Chicago Cougars, scoring eleven goals and adding thirty-three assists. He played junior for several teams with the Smiths Falls Bears, Oshawa Generals, and the Ottawa Montagnards from 1962 to 1966. Zaine turned pro with the Clinton Comets of the Eastern Hockey League in 1966-67 and 1967-68, and played for the Canadian National Team in 1968-69. That drew attention from the Baltimore Clippers of the American Hockey League, who signed Zaine as a free agent in 1969. He scored 42 points in 53 games for the Clippers in 1969-70, good enough for the Pittsburgh Penguins to trade for him at the end of the season. In 1970-71 Zaine made his NHL debut, scoring 13 points in 37 games. The Penguins let him go in the Intra-League Draft to the Buffalo Sabres. In 1971-72 he got into 24 games for the Sabres, with 2 goals and 1 assist. That marked the end of his NHL career. Zaine jumped to the World Hockey Association, playing three seasons for the Chicago Cougars and retired in 1975.
