Joe Dan Jumper is the son of Miccosukee Chief Jumper. He is also a former LRRP (Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol), served in Grenada until he was wounded and took a Section 8 discharge after a stay in the VA hospital, later diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Joe Dan later joined up with other former LRRPs to stop what they perceive is a "selling out" to drug dealers by the Chief to get money from the dealer Levec for needed improvements into the reservation, including a new clinic and housing, and began raiding Levec's deals, stealing and destroying the drugs, then confronted his father at tribal council about the money source. Joe Dan is also a proud Miccosukee, even having a discussion with the visiting author Rico Cooper about race relations between the Native America

Joe Dan kidnaps his father and takes him to an expensive condo (where Joe Dan receives his SSI checks for his PTSD), kills Levec and his men, then when threatened with arrest for his actions, decides it's "better to die a hero than live on your knees" and jumps to his death off the penthouse patio.
