  • The Kuswacht, or Coast Guard, is the armed naval force of Saridan. However, while considered part of the five uniformed services of the nation, the Coast Guard is a green-water naval force which operates mostly within Saridan's territorial waters. Because of this role, the Coast Guard consists exclusively of patrol, escort and support vessels. Roles of the Kustwacht are diverse but include: * Patrol of territorial waters and disputed territories * Anti-smuggling, anti-piracy * Maritime policing and ship inspections * Harbour and coastal security * Research and survey * Search and Rescue * Fisheries protection The location of Sint Pietereiland proves the biggest challenge for the Coast Guard. Being nearly 400 kilometers from the mainland its busy waters have proven a daunting task to monitor. Over an average month more than 1,800 major vessels pass through the The Shallows, often simply Vlakwater (Flat Water), that separate the island from the mainland, alongside thousands of smaller private vessels and pleasure craft. The Coast Guard has a strong relationship with its counterparts in Cildania and Al'Badara who jointly patrol the Strait of Life, often referred to as Zeeëngten (The Narrows).
