Hit Dice, or Hit Die, also known as HD, which you'll see mentioned in class kit descriptions as well as in some spells. For non-player creatures, HD is similarly referred to as their levels, with higher HD often representing stronger and tougher creatures. For playable characters, it’s one of the defining factor in their total Hit Points (HP), implemented in their earlier levels varying among classes.

  • Hit dice (or HD) is roughly equivalent to a monster's level and gives the approximate hit points the monster has. Normal calculation for monster's HP is total of hit dice amount of 8-sided dice. Exceptions are golems, riders, special "fixed" HP monsters (which are usually uniques), adult dragons, elementals on their home planes, and HD:0 monsters. When the player is polymorphed into a monster, the status line shows HD instead of experience level. Player's hit points are also usually HD times d8. Exceptions to this are golems, adult dragons, elementals on their home planes, and HD:0 monsters.
  • Hit dice (HD) are the dice rolled to generate a creature's hit point total. The number of dice is equal to the creature's level, and the type of die is determined by the creature's classes. When used to indicate the number of dice, this term is most often applied to monsters, but it can be used in reference to any character. For each level a creature has, the roll of the hit die for that level determines base hit points to which bonus hit points for constitution and toughness are added. This is subject to a 1 hit point minimum for the level (relevant if the constitution modifier is negative).

This is subject to a 1 hit point minimum for the level (relevant if the constitution modifier is negative). Most non-player characters (including monsters) do not actually roll hit dice, but instead have the total of their rolls assigned by the module creator. Bonus and minimum hit points still apply.

Exceptions are golems, riders, special "fixed" HP monsters (which are usually uniques), adult dragons, elementals on their home planes, and HD:0 monsters. When a monster is generated, the number of hit dice it gets can vary. Each monster type has a base HD allotment. If this is higher than the current dungeon level, its HD are decreased by one; otherwise, HD are increased by one-fifth the difference. Then, if its base HD are less than your current experience level, they are increased by one-quarter the difference. This will never take the monster above 1.5 times its base HD (rounded down) or above 49. When the player is polymorphed into a monster, the status line shows HD instead of experience level. Player's hit points are also usually HD times d8. Exceptions to this are golems, adult dragons, elementals on their home planes, and HD:0 monsters. This page is a .
