Biography
  • Joey Kourafas is a former NASCAR driver from Sharon, MA. He was the youngest NASCAR series champion in 1974 and the 1st Oxford 250 champion also in 74. He was the first champion of the Busch East Series in 1987. In addition, Kourafas competed in twelve Nationwide Series events in his career, earning three top-tens and one pole. Kourafas' started racing in the early 70's at Norwood Arena near his home in Massachusetts. In 1973 he went racing all over New England in a car built by his father Steve and cousin Harry and sponsored by his uncle Jim owner of Dench Ford. He learned a lot at a very young age that 1st year breaking in the old Nascar North LMS series, he joined Robbie Crouch and John Rosati to make up the Mod Squad and got his nickname Joey "the Kid" Kourafas. He had some success toward the end of the year with a handful of 2nd place finishes. In 1974 he teamed up with Bob Curtis to win the NASCAR Northern LMS Championship, to go along with double digit feature wins including the 1st OXFORD 250 and two track championships Thunder Road VT and Plattsburgh NY. Over the next few years Northern NASCAR racing and Kourafas went through a lot of changes. Kourafas raced for many different owners including Jay Brodrick in one of the original Kit Cars and Bob Ferreira just to name a few all up and down the east coast. At the end of 1983 Kourafas teamed up with Sandy MacKinnon for many successful seasons including the 1st Busch East Series Championship in 1987. In only 88 races Kourafas/MacKinnon racked up 5 wins 37 top 5 and 64 top 10 place finishes. Kourafas ended his career with the Tilden/New England racing team from 1989-1992. Where he won two races with 16 top 5's and 37 top 10's in just 58 races. Joey Kourafas was inducted into the NEAR racing Hall of Fame class of 2012. External Links *Stats
