The Sea of Winter is a large ocean on the western side of the Shores of Winter. It proves a difficult beast to navigate by mariners due to the large amount of icebergs and small ice islands that float in the waves. More skilled sailors will stick very close to the coast, just in case of any difficulties out at sea. It is believed that a sea dragon, known as the Sea Serpent of the Sea of Winter (or just The Sea Serpent), lurks within her depths. This myth is compounded by tales told by some of the barbarians of Bloodfall and minstrels that occupy the taverns and inns of the Shores. The sea dragon is most famous in one of the tales composed by Thorwald Bladestorm, whom is said to have defeated this beast in order to regain a lost sword that enables the hero of his tale to return to honour an

  • The Sea of Winter is a large ocean on the western side of the Shores of Winter. The sea dragon is most famous in one of the tales composed by Thorwald Bladestorm, whom is said to have defeated this beast in order to regain a lost sword that enables the hero of his tale to return to honour and glory in his home. During the winter, the sea's temperature drops so far below freezing that very few people survive any sort of accident at sea. It is theorized by the academics that a human would last less than an hour before succumbing to hypothermia; an elf or a halfling would fare much worse. The bottom of the Sea is littered with many shipwrecks caused by the blizzards that come from the western seafront. Some of these shipwrecks have never been identified, due to the cold temperature preventing exploration of the depths. While these blizzards are regular, as can be evidenced by the constant snow in Frostkeep and the northern reaches, some blizzards are so powerful that ships are not authorized to sail the waters. In Frostkeep, the order not to sail comes from the Duke, and sailors do so at their own personal risk. Travelers are well-advised not to sail by the guards of the town. The Sea of Winter is also said to hold a few communities of kuo-toa somewhere along the western shores between Tarloc and the River Ashrin. There is an old myth telling that anyone who sails straight across the Sea of Winter goes mad and drowns themselves, apparently from the enthralling singing of mermaids, frost nymphs, kuo-toa, or the Sea Serpent itself.
