Thomas Trenton was born in Bangor, Maine State on November 14, 1953. He was born of a working class family; his father was a fisherman and his mother was a homemaker. In 1972, he began to attend the University of Maine State where he earned a degree in political science. He later met Laura Smithson and they formed a strong friendship. When she ran for prime minister, she asked him to be the deputy prime minister. His term began on January 1st.
