  • The quantum torpedo was originally conceived as a replacement for the standard photon torpedo. Development began in the late 2360s, and started to enter use in the early 2370s. (DS9 episode: "Defiant", ST movie: First Contact) The quantum torpedo utilizes a zero-point energy reaction to create a 50+ isoton explosion. The basic mechanism was already being experimented with in the year 2236. The first warhead application came in 2355. It was created as one of the weapon systems designed to fight the Borg Collective. Indeed, quantum torpedoes were widely used by the Federation fleet when the Borg launched their second assault on Earth in early 2373, one of the starships that used these weapons was the USS Enterprise-E. There are two types of torpedo tubes created for this weapon: The pulse fire tube (1 torp/second) and the rapid fire tube (which can fire at a rate of 4/second) (DS9 reference: Technical Manual; ST movie: First Contact) In 2372, the Excelsior-class USS Lakota was modified to be equipped with quantum torpedoes. (DS9 episode: "Paradise Lost") By 2376, Deep Space 9 was armed with quantum torpedoes. (DS9 novel: Avatar, Book One) After their successful first test on the USS Defiant, quantum torpedoes were implemented throughout the Federation fleet. Defiant, Sovereign, Luna, Vesta, Akira and Achilles-class starships included quantum torpedoes in their arsenal. The technology was later shared with the Klingon Empire and was implemented on their Qang-class vessels. In the Kelvin timeline, Starfleet had begun using quantum torpedoes as early as the 2250s. Like in the prime reality, the basic mechanism was tested in 2236. Obviously, the Federation developed the quantum torpedo early because the Romulans had acquired the Narada's schematics as a result of a Vulcan revenge plot gone wrong and used them to create their own ships. While not yet in use as standard armaments they could be deployed on Arbiter-class, Constitution-class, Defender-class, Guardian-class, and Interceptor-class starships. (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: First Contact) The Cardassian mobile weapon Dreadnought also carried quantum torpedoes. It was unknown whether they shared a similar design to Starfleet weapons or not. (VOY: "Dreadnought") Quantum torpedoes were not completely effective against solid neutronium. In 2371, after hijacking the USS Defiant and taking it deep into Cardassian space, Thomas Riker utilized the ship's quantum torpedoes against a modified Keldon Class Cruiser just outside the Orias system. The Defiant fired four torpedoes at the cruiser; two hit the ship's ventral hull, and two hit the tail. The damage from these four torpedoes knocked the ship's defense systems offline and caused the loss of main power. (DS9: "Defiant") The following year, Captain Sisko utilized the Defiant's quantum torpedoes against the Klingons, as he attempted to rescue the Detapa Council from the Cardassian ship Prakesh. (DS9: "The Way of the Warrior") Sisko ordered Chief O'Brien to rig the Defiant's two atmospheric probes with quantum torpedo warheads. (DS9: "Starship Down") After he traveled back to Earth, in 1947, Quark offered to teach General Rex Denning how to make quantum torpedoes – for the right price. (DS9: "Little Green Men") By mid-year, the USS Lakota had received a major upgrade, including a full complement of quantum torpedoes. Admiral Leyton suggested that Captain Benteen should use the increased firepower provided by the Lakota's quantum torpedoes as a means to destroy the Defiant outright. (DS9: "Paradise Lost") Later that year, Lieutenant Commander Worf destroyed a Klingon civilian transport that suddenly decloaked in front of the Defiant, with a full spread of quantum torpedoes. (DS9: "Rules of Engagement") In 2373, the USS Enterprise-E used quantum torpedoes in the Battle of Sector 001 to destroy a Borg cube. They were later reused over Earth of 2063 against a Borg sphere that had traveled back in time to sabotage First Contact. Four quantum torpedoes were sufficient to destroy the vessel. (Star Trek: First Contact) Later that year, Benjamin Sisko ordered Worf to attach a cargo pod containing two hundred kilograms of trilithium resin on to two quantum torpedoes. These torpedoes were designed to detonate in the atmosphere of Solosos III, causing the planet to be uninhabitable for humans, and forcing the Maquis colony there to be evacuated. (DS9: "For the Uniform") In 2374, the USS Valiant utilized quantum torpedoes in its engagement with a Jem'Hadar fighter. (DS9: "Valiant") In 2375, the Defiant destroyed a Breen warship with a spread of quantum torpedoes during the Second Battle of Chin'toka, before it was destroyed by the Breen's new energy dampening weapon. (DS9: "The Changing Face of Evil") As the new USS Defiant pushed on towards Cardassia Prime, during the final battle of the Dominion War, Worf reported that the ship had used all but forty-five of its quantum torpedoes. (DS9: "What You Leave Behind") As of 2379, quantum torpedoes had yet to completely replace the photon torpedo on the largest Starfleet vessels. The USS Enterprise-E had only one quantum torpedo bay located on the lowest deck of the saucer module, just forward of the deflector dish.(Star Trek Nemesis)

During its battle to keep the USS Defiant from reaching Earth Vice Admiral James Leyton ordered the Lakota to use its quantum torpedoes to destroy the Defiant. Captain Erika Benteen balked at this order not willing to destroy another Starfleet vessel and stood down her starship. (DS9: "Paradise Lost") The Sovereign-class was equipped with quantum torpedoes. (Star Trek: First Contact) For reasons unknown, the Romulans gained access to quantum torpedo technology between 2379 and 2383. The Bouteina refit of the Norexan-class had a quantum torpedo tube installed on existing hulls. (RIS Bouteina) It is likely that, in the Tal Prai'ex, the terms singularity torpedo and quantum torpedo are used interchangeably. USS Bajor, a late-model Galaxy-class starship, was equipped with quantum torpedoes from its construction instead of photon torpedoes, and Captain Kanril Eleya pointedly insisted that her ship be fully armed before she would leave dock, even for the launch ceremony in 2409. During the Iconian War in 2410, these were supplemented with higher-yield neutronic torpedoes. In January 2411, Rachel Connor's MACO Unit 131 cannibalized one of Bajor's quantum torpedoes for a demolition charge to destroy a Borg outpost. It had an estimated 80 megaton yield.
