The Valley East Fire Department protected the City of Valley East, located north of the City of Sudbury in the Regional Municipality of Sudbury, Ontario. Valley East was unique in Sudbury Region in that it was the only fire department other than Sudbury to have full-time fire suppression staff. Each of the stations in Val Caron and Hanmer had a full-time firefighter on duty, supplemented by volunteers. When the central fire station in Val Therese opened in 1993, the full-time firefighters were relocated there. The Val Caron and Hanmer stations remained as volunteer halls and are still in service today.

George Hanmore was the last chief of Valley East before amalgamation and served as an assistant chief with Greater Sudbury. He retired, then became the full-time chief of Greater Napanee Fire Services before his death from cancer in 2010. On January 1, 2001, Valley East was amalgamated with other area municipalities to form the City of Greater Sudbury. The Valley East Fire Department became part of Greater Sudbury Fire Services. Station 16, the former Valley East headquarters, remains a composite station.
