| - Jim was found by Red Skull, when looking for the imprisoned Professor Horton to repair his battlesuit. The Android was protecting Horton's corpse. As soon as Schmidt realized that the android was capable of duplicating the Avengers' powers, he took advantage of the android's naiveté, saying that now Horton was dead he would look after Jim, saying that is what Phineas would have wanted, and tried to pit him against the heroes. Hammond was sent to steal fuel for HYDRA. The Android went on a rampage to attract the Avengers' attention. He broke into the facility by copying a guard's fingerprints. Having already assimilated Human Torch's pyrokinesis of flight, Jim replicated Wasp's stings, Thor's lightning, Iron Man's arc power, and Quicksilver's super-speed. With all their powers combined, Hammond soon overpowered the Avengers. When Hulk showed up to try to stop him, he succeeded in emulating the emerald giant's powers, despite Banner's best efforts to prevent it. This time Hammond "adapted" and overcame his weakness. The combined power of Hammond and Red Skull nearly succeed in killing the Avengers until Scarlet Witch stepped in and allowed herself to be copied. Hammond acquired Clea's powers and used it to read Schmidt's thoughts, learning of Schmidt's manipulations. At this point, Red Skull activated a failsafe killswitch developed by Horton to detonate the bomb at the base of the android's brain. However, having also duplicated Wolverine's immortality, Jim could now regenerate himself and simply regrew his head. The disgruntled android turned against the Red Skull, tearing his battlesuit apart and preparing to kill him. Hammond only ceased his attack when the terrified Red Skull pleaded for mercy. Upon realizing that he had nothing left to learn from Earth, Hammond gazed upon the cosmos, evolved into a gold version of himself, and departed to explore the universe. Vision claimed Jim Hammond had departed to go "where gods belong," prompting the Red Skull to scoff that Jim is no god. Captain America replied that Skull should be worried if the "Human Torch" ever did come back. Years later, Human Torch embarked on his return to Earth, and on his way, he transported Xandar to another dimension. The expanded Avengers assumed he had vaporized the planet, so they set up three defense layers to protect Earth. However, Jim was now nearly omnipotent and he beat them all without effort. He set off after the Red Skull determined to kill him. Yellowjacket and Red Skull worked to try and defeat Hammond by devising a energy weapon against him. Jim at this point was no longer an android, and therefore Schmidt's defenses were useless against him. Yellowjacket took the Red Skull into a microscopic world, but Jim followed them. Hammond, above everything else, was confused about his own existence. He was made to evolve, but he didn't know what he was evolving into, or what his purpose was.
