He used Pell's mother for sex and to buy drugs, and eventually began beating and sexually abusing Clayton. He owned a belt with the initials "C.H." on the buckle, and used the same belt to strangle Lily Price in 1989. In 2001, he abducted and killed 13-year-old Amanda Phillips, and he used her address on his drivers license. In July of 2008, he drowned his father in a bathtub, moved into his father's condo in Los Alamitos and assumed the elder Hardy's identity. He adopted the appearance and habits of a sick old man. On 10 October 2011, he was visited by LAPD cold-case detectives David Chu and Harry Bosch. They were initially fooled by the act, until Bosch discovered that his oxygen bottles were empty and his prescription medications had all expired in 2008. Bosch threatened to shoot Hardy if he did not talk, and Hardy admitted that the documentation of his murders was in the condo next door which had also been owned by his father. Although he had been caught, Hardy was rather proud of his achievements as a serial killer. He told Bosch that they would become famous together. On Monday 10 October 2011, Hardy was on a bus from county jail to the courthouse for his arraignment. He was unaware that Clayton Pell was on the same bus. Pell got behind Hardy and attempted to strangle him with his chain shackles. Pell would have succeeded except that Harry Bosch stopped the bus and rescued Hardy. Hardy was a serial killer operating under the radar for over twenty years. In all, he claimed to have murdered 37 victims, and bears a tattoo on his back between his shoulder blades depicting a cemetery with 37 crosses and the phrase "Bene Decessit," which translates to "died well."
