- The XM8, developed by Heckler & Koch USA (the U.S. branch of the renouned German firearms company), originally started out as the underslung assault rifle component of the prototype XM29 Objective Individual Combat Weapon (OICW). When the XM29 didn't meet the weight, cost, and performance requirements, it was split into two separate weapons, the XM25 Counter Defilade Target Engagement (CDTE) System, and the XM8 Lightweight Assault Rifle. The XM8 fires the NATO-standard 5.56x45mm cartridge, and weighs 7.5lbs, 20% lighter than the M4A1 that it had failed to replace.

As of 2013, the XM8 is one of the standard service rifles of the 5th Special Forces Group, also known as Ghost Recon. The XM8 DMR has an underbarrel grenade launcher that is initially loaded with an HEDP grenade that inflicts up to 270 damage, depending on how close the target is to the center of the explosion (the closer, the more damage dealt). However, only electric grenades may be gathered in the Hive Cluster, so after the HEDP grenade is fired, the grenade launcher can only be loaded with an electric grenade. Each electric grenade inflicts 4.8 damage, but can stun enemies for significantly longer periods of time. The reload button must be held down in order for an electric grenade to be loaded into the grenade launcher when it's empty, and will add 3.30 seconds to the reload time if the XM8 DMR's capacity is not full.
