He played junior hockey for the Ottawa St Malachys and Ottawa Rideaus from 1933 to 1935. After that he played senior hockey in the Ottawa City Senior League with the Cornwall Flyers in 1937-38 and 1938-39, leading the league in points in both seasons. Brown turned pro in 1939-30 with the Pittsburgh Hornets and the Detroit Red Wings. Over the next three seasons Brown played for both the Indianapolis Capitals and the Red Wings. He won the Stanley Cup in 1943. In 1943 Brown returned to senior hockey, playing for teams in the Ottawa area and for the Valleyfield Braves and the Glace Bay Miners.
