The Reverend Wilbert Awdry (June 15 1911 - March 21 1997) was the author of the first twenty-six books of the Railway Series. These were used as the basis for Britt Allcroft's television series Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends. Although he liked series 1 and 2, he did not like some of the adaptions from series 3 and 4, especially Henry's Forest and Rusty to the Rescue. Better known as the "Reverend W. Awdry", he was a clergyman, railway enthusiast and children's author.
