She was formerly married to her X-Men co-star Cedric Smith, 17 years her senior, with whom she had a son, Darcy Montgomery Smith, in 1993. She does not attend fan conventions, want fan clubs in her name, or make public appearances in general due to an incident in which some die hard fans of the War of the Worlds television series were outraged by the changes in the second season, and as a result, she received hate mail and death threats to herself and her family.
