Using his daughter's hand in marriage as leverage, Jared made an agreement with his daughter's suitor, Akish, to secretly murder Omer. Omer, however, was warned by the lord in a dream to flee the land, and fled with his family to a land called Ablom. While he was away, Akish murdered Jared and took the throne for his own. Akish was insecure in his position, however. Fearing one of his sons had too much power, Akish placed him prison where he starved to death. This created a break in the family as Akish's other sons rebelled against him. This fighting destroyed nearly everyone in the land until only 30 people were left alive. Those 30 fled to Omer, leaving him once again to assume the throne of the Jaredites. As he grew older, he had another son Emer, whom he conferred the kindom on two years before he died.[1] Omer is also noted in the genealogy of Ether listed in the first chapter of the Book of Ether as being the father of Emer and the son of Shule.[2]
