On August 3rd, Earl reached hurricane status and made landfall 12 miles south of Cancun as a Category 2 Hurricane, killing 90 people and injuring 41, as well as causing 950,000 USD in damages. On August 4, Earl exited into the Gulf of Mexico and rapidly intensified into a Category 4, moving northwestward towards Texas. Hurricane Earl strengthened into a Category 5 Hurricane and made landfall at peak intensity, killing 120 people and injuring 150 more on the 5th. Earl rapidly weakened after landfall into a Tropical Storm later that day. Earl dissipated the next day, not before causing a total of 720 million USD in damages.
