The show was created by father and son television writers Bryan Elsley and Jamie Brittain for Company Pictures. The show premiered on E4 on January 25 2007 and ended August 5, 2013. The show is known for its casting of amateur young actors and young writers and for entirely replacing the cast every two series, when the characters graduate from sixth form. Due to the popularity of the show, a movie was planned, and a Skins American adaptation was created by MTV to varying degrees of success, as the movie was eventually shelved while the US adaptation was cancelled after one season.
