His Eminence the Most Reverend Archbishop Vladimir (Sokolovsky-Avtonomov) of the Aleutians was Bishop of the Russian Diocese of the Aleutian Islands and Alaska from 1888 to 1891. His arrival in San Francisco ended the six year period that the diocese was administered from St. Petersburg. His arrival also meant there was a ruling hierarch in the United States at the time many Uniate immigrants to the United States began to return to the Orthodox Church. In addition to encouraging the use of English in San Francisco cathedral, he traveled widely throughout the United States.
