The band played its first show at the Gaslighter Theater in Gilroy, California on February 23, 2001. Since then, the band has gone on to support notable punk and metal bands including The Misfits, T.S.O.L, Prong, The Dickies, Drunk Injuns, and Papa Wheelie (featuring Jason Newsted). Members of Rivals contributed gang vocals on "Clenching the Fists of Dissent" from Machine Head's 2007 album The Blackening. In 2011, Rivals was recognized as a top 5 finalist in San Francisco radio station Live 105's "Your Shot To Rock" contest. The band was selected out of over 200 demo submissions and a round of public voti
