- Very little is known about Democritus' life, but historians do know he was born in Abdera, Thrace (now part of modern Greece). His birth and death date are estimated. As the pupil of Leucippus, he became interested in atoms. His belief was that all matter is made up of little units called atoms. Although he was persecuted at the time, this idea was picked up by scientists after him, and progressed into one of the greatest scientific discoveries. According to Diogenes Laertius, Protagoras studied with Democritus.
- Democritus wrote on various topics that encompass most the areas of ancient study – mathematics, physics, medicine, agriculture, ethics, poetry, grammar, music, painting, aesthetics, and acoustics. Unfortunately many of the documents are lost, with the exception of only a few.
- Democritus (Greek: Δημόκριτος, Dēmokritos, "chosen of the people") (c. 460 BCE – c. 370 BCE) was an Ancient Greek philosopher born in Abdera in the north of Greece.[1] He was the most prolific, and ultimately the most influential, of the pre-Socratic philosophers; his atomic theory may be regarded as the culmination of early Greek thought.[2]

Their hypothesis on atoms is remarkably similar to modern science, and avoided many of the errors found in their contemporaries. Largely ignored in Athens, Democritus was nevertheless well-known to his fellow northern-born philosopher Aristotle. Plato is said to have disliked him so much that he wished all his books burnt.[3] Many consider Democritus to be the "father of modern science".[
