Presidents elected prior to 1997 receive lifetime Secret Service protection for themselves and their spouses. (This currently applies to Carter, Bush Senior and Clinton.) In 1997 the law was changed to provide protection for only ten years after leaving office. Any president can decline protection, though so far none has done so.
