Bird by Snow is a thread in the D.I.Y. (do it yourself) movement that exists within the independent music scene, and all subcultures globally. Bird by Snow is part of a new tradition of the Indie American North West Aesthetic based fundamentally on low-fidelity home recordings, non-traditional song-craft, hand made/limited releases, and intimate/non-conventional performances. Conceptually this movement is based around community, esoterica, ecology, naturalism, primitivism, animalism, social justice, and other related issues. Similar bands and forbearers are Mount Eerie / The Microphones, Little Wings, Will Oldham, Karl Blau, Julie Doiron, Eric’s Trip, Calvin Johnson, Josephine Foster, Mirah, Thanksgiving, Almaden, Arrington De Dionyso, Black Forest/Black Sea, Blithe Sons, Whysp and many more world wide. Bird by Snow released their first record in 2005, titled “Antlers and the Sun and all the Things that Grow Old and Pass Away,” on Gnome Life Records, a handmade vinyl only label based in Pacific Grove, California. The release was made on transparent-red vinyl in three limited editions: hand-painted record jackets, intaglio printed poster jackets, and screen-printed record jackets. In 2006 Gnome Life Records released the 7-inch single “Industrial Collapse” and a second LP entitled “Sky” by Bird by Snow. These releases were on black vinyl with block printed (linoleum cut) jackets, and transparent-blue vinyl with screen-printed jackets, respectively. “Sky” was released in Europe on the Swedish label Kning Disk in 2007. Bird by Snow is celebrated for its spiritual, emotional, and lyrical integrity, depth of field composition, unique genre bending, and highly elaborate packaging/presentation.
