Acetylated lanolin alcohol, sometimes known as "sheep alcohol", lanolin alcohol or wool alcohol, is a non-drying organic compound produced from lanolin, the fat of wool shearings, which has been reacted with acetic acid and a small amount of lye(NaOH). There are synthetic variants available; however, the animal-derived product has more anti-allergenic tendencies. Acetylated lanolin alcohol is used as an emollient, to soften skin, but is highly comedogenic. For this reason, those who frequently erupt with whiteheads or blackheads are advised to avoid topical use of this substance on the skin. It is used in the product Aquaphor.

Hydrolysis of lanolin yields lanolin alcohols and lanolin acids. Lanolin acids can be further reduced in into lanolin acids. These lanolin alcohols are further acetylated into ALA. Lanolin alcohols are a rich source of cholesterol (an important skin lipid) and are powerful water-in-oil emulsifiers; they have been used extensively in skin care products for over 100 years. Interestingly, approximately 40% of the acids derived from lanolin are alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs). The use of AHAs in skin care products has attracted a great deal of attention in recent years. Details of the AHA’s isolated from lanolin can be seen in the table below.
