Olwë was an Elf of the Teleri of Aman. When he and his kin reached Aman, they chose to remain there in both Tol Eressëa and Alqualondë apart from the rest of the Elves of Aman. He became both Lord of Alqualondë and King of the Teleri. Olwë was the father of Eärwen and had several unnamed sons. He was the younger brother of Elwë (Elu Thingol) and the older brother of Elmo. Other Telerin elves such Nowë (Círdan) were said to be akin to Olwë.

When Elwe vanished in Beleriand during the Great Journey, Olwe became King of the Teleri and brought nearly all or his people to Aman in the second crossing. The Teleri settled on Tol Eressea—there learning the art of shipbuilding from the Maia Osse—before settling on the shores of Eldamar and building the fair port of Alqualonde. Olwe's people suffered the cruel attack of the Noldor and the theft of their ships; they never forgot the heinous crimes of Feanor's people. When the Valar sailed to overthrow Morgoth for the last time, the Teleri reluctantly agreed to transport the Vala Host, but they remained with their ships, aloof from battle. Zatrzymał się w Doriath gdy Elwe zniknął w lesie, lecz potem ruszył dalej i dotarł do Amanu. Był lordem na Tol Eressei. Później gdy Falmari wreszcie dotarli do Eldamaru został królem w Alqualondë. Gdy Feanor ruszył w poszukiwaniu Silmarili, chciał uzyskać od Olwego statki falmarich, jednak król był niewzruszony. Skończyło się to akcją zbrojną w której zginęło wielu elfów z obu szczepów. Olwe wezwał na pomoc Ossëgo, lecz ten się nie pojawił, gdyż Manwë zabronił zatrzymywać Noldorów siłą.
