  • Maggot therapy is the use of disinfected fly maggots to consume and disinfect necrotic tissue. Early clinical evidence shows that it is more effective than existing alternative treatments. In 2004, they were approved by the FDA to treat bedsores, foot ulcers and other non-healing wounds of the skin and soft tissue. including those from trauma and surgery. Traditionally, necrotic tissue was removed with surgery, but surgeons often had to cut away healthy tissue as well. Although maggots take 1-2 days, they are far more precise in removing only necrotic tissue. In addition, the maggots secrete an anti-bacterial solutions that has been shown to be effective against even antibiotic resistant bacteria. Maggots cannot be used in oxygen poor or very dry environments.
