Tachyon emissions are capable of rendering 24th century Starfleet variety gravity boots inoperable. In 2287, Captain Spock took a pair of gravity boots on shore leave to Yosemite National Park on Earth. He used the boots to hover near Captain Kirk, who was climbing the sheer face of El Capitan. Kirk slipped and plummeted towards the Earth, but Spock was able to utilize the jets in the boots to speed towards Kirk and catch him before he struck the ground. (TOS movie: Star Trek V: The Final Frontier) In 2379, Security Officer Austin Braddock mentioned using gravity boots to climb a two hundred meter rock wall to assault the nadion-pulse cannon firebase on Mount Ranakar on Tezwa; Chief Engineer Geordi La Forge informed Braddock that the tachyon spill from the cannon would prevent their use, forcing them to climb manually. (TNG novel: A Time to Kill) Although the boots seen in Star Trek V utilized forced jets of air, it can be theorized that the 24th century version mentioned in A Time to Kill could have been redesigned to use anti-grav technology commonly found on shuttles and medical gurneys.
