The "three-finger salute" is a colloquial term for performing a restart via the use of the keyboard shortcut which would trigger the reset switch ("software reset switch"). By pressing command-shift-power button, the Macintosh would restart immediately. All unsaved changes in opened applications and documents would be lost.
