abstract
  • These horse archers use speed to sweep in, attack, and then ride out of range. The Mescalero Apache are a mountain people and, unusually for such a folk, highly skilled riders. Masters of irregular warfare, they have an intimate knowledge of the landscape, and concealment skills that give them an edge over enemies. The Mescalero Apache take full advantage of the environment, and recognize the importance of subterfuge and diversions when fighting a larger enemy force. They even create fake camps, climb sheer rock faces to leave no trail, and live off the land, all to confound enemy trackers. Their horses are not only for hunting and battle, but are also eaten when food is scarce. The Mescalero Apache lived among the mountains of New Mexico and Texas. The heart of their homeland was the peak of the Sierra Blanca. Their name originates from their use of the century mescal plant, a reliable source of food that can be found in the deserts of New Mexico. The tribe harvested the plant's heart and cooked it by steaming. Today the plant is used in a very different form: it is distilled to create mescal, a spirit closely related to tequila.
