During World War II, Nick, LaCroix, and Janette are living in London. Daniel, a boy orphaned in the Blitz, has turned pickpocket; but, when he is caught, instead of punishing him, Janette insists on taking him in. He becomes a pet of all of them, even LaCroix—to Nick's surprise, until he learns that LaCroix intends to bring Daniel over, curious to discover what such a young boy would become as a vampire. Horrified, Nick tries to warn Daniel to flee. But it is too late.
