John Masefield wrote the poem Sea-Fever which gives the quote "All I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by." This quote was used by Captain James T. Kirk (TOS movie: Star Trek V: The Final Frontier) and Captain Jean-Luc Picard (TNG novel: The Forgotten War).
