With the goal of inspiring a deep love and knowledge of great music, Musicopia’s programs promote the transformative powers of music, the value of musical discipline and an appreciation of cultural diversity." Founded in 1974, Musicopia continues today to offer a wide range of music education programs throughout the Delaware Valley. Currently, Musicopia presents approximately 600 programs that reach over 40,000 students and community members. 81% of our operating budget goes to programs and services with the majority of those resources benefitting low-income communities. PROGRAMS The following are Musicopia's initiatives: Gift of Music Instrument Donation Program Musicopia collects, repairs, and places donated instruments in schools with students who cannot afford to buy or rent an instrument. Musicopia String Orchestra (MSO) The Musicopia String Orchestra (MSO) provides structured instrumental skill-building and performance opportunities to mostly inner-city youth in Philadelphia ages 7-18. Bridge to Music- North Philadelphia Since 2007 Musicopia has worked directly with teachers, administrators, and the School District of Philadelphia, to strengthen music programs within four schools in North Philadelphia. The programs include multi-week residencies, vocal and instrumental coaching, and field trips to World Café Live and open rehearsals by the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia. Musicopia also works directly with school administration and music teachers to identify the school’s instrument and repair needs. Drumline The Musicopia Drumline began in 2005 as an after-school program at the General George Meade School, specifically targeted toward at-risk youth. Open to students of all skill levels who have an interest in percussion, the Drumline has won four All-Eastern Percussion Championship Titles, expanded and diversified its musical repertoire, increased its network of music and academic resources, and seen members of its graduating classes move on to premiere Arts Magnet High Schools. Bridge to Music: The City of Chester Due to the furloughing of all but one music teacher within the Chester-Upland School District, Musicopia is the sole outside provider of music education for many of the area’s students. Musicopia provides in-school music programs to the district, in addition to its after-school programming options at the Crozer-Keystone Wellness Center’s Youth Serving Organizations (YSOs).
