  • Whether or not you want to make your mark through the militaristic path, you cannot ignore one thing: the economy is vital! You need resources and money to trade, recruit and maintain armies, bribe your neighbors, pay tributes, and even to improve your economy and produce some more! Gold is the most important resource. It will be collected in two manners, tax collection on your lawful populations (outlaws do not pay taxes!) and gold mines. The amount of gold you possess is measured in ducats. In addition to those two basic revenue sources, you can earn gold by selling resources in the market, or turn to your neighbors to supply you, either through trade, tribute, gift, or simply by going there with your armies threatening them into paying! In Economy => Resume you will see displayed your Land’s efficiency. The efficiency of a Land affects tax revenue. It depends on the Type of Land, and its size, both in territories and total populations. As a Land grows, its efficiency will slowly go down. The amount of gold collected trough taxation is calculated in the following manner: Taxation of a territory = (Population + territory animals X 0.2 note1) X 0.10 X Land efficiency X (1 + City level X 0.05) note1 This may seem odd, but the animals used by the populations will generate wealth (working in fields, milk, skin, meat, etc). The amount of gold received from gold mines can be seen in economy => resources or in the facilities list, and depends upon the level of natural richness of such metal the territory has, and upon the Land types efficiency exploiting mines. In Economy => Resume you will also see the income statement of the previous turn, where you can identify your revenue sources (tax collection, received tributes, mines and goods sold at the market) and how it was spent (tributes paid, facilities maintenance, military units maintenance, market expenses, facility construction and military units recruitment). Revenues minus expense will give you the surplus/deficit for the turn, which is the variation of your total gold stock from the previous turn to the beginning of the current one. Be careful not to let your gold go to negative values, has you will automatically have to borrow money, from which you will pay a 10% interest per month! And if the value continues to drop you will eventually suffer from worst effects, which in extreme circumstances will completely cripple your Land. When you finish the turn between minus Total Population X 0.05 and minus Total Population X 0.20, your armies will become demoralized and less battle ready, which is traduced in the game by having all your armies with a reduced status value at the end of the turn (when salaries are due). The exact impact in your army’s status is directly proportional to the percentage of the original interval covered, so if you have minus Total Population X 0.0501 you will not even notice such a small impact, but as you grow closer to minus Total Population X 0.20 your armies will move closer to 0 status. If, for example, you end the turn with gold equal to minus Total Population X 0.125 your army’s status will be reduced to half of the status they had when the end of the turn was reached. When you finish the turn between minus Total Population X 0.20 and minus Total Population X 0.50, you will also face desertions from the ranks (same mechanic as demobilization, except that it is automatic)! The percentage of deserters varies between 0% and 40% and is directly proportional to the percentage of the original interval covered. So for example if you finish the turn with minus Total Population X 0.26, 8% of all your armies will defect (20% of the interval), and if you finish the turn with minus Total Population X 0.35, 20% of all your armies will defect (50% of the interval). When you finish the turn over minus Total Population X 0.50 you will suffer the maximum of both effects, so you’ll have all the armies status dropped to 0 and 40% of your armies will defect. For the purpose of the above intervals the “Total Population” is your Lands total population at the end of the month (after that month’s conquers, losses, population expansions…) with a minimum of 100.000. It is irrelevant how much bellow that value you are. Also keep in mind that the total gold at the end of the turn is the amount after interest is paid, so you end turn with minus 20.000 in gold the amount considered will be the minus 22.000 you’ll have after the 10% interest is applied. Of course, if you go into negative money you will also not be able to do anything that requires gold, such as recruiting new units, buying resources in the market or building facilities. This happens because you cannot voluntarily borrow money. Loans will only be received to automatically cover maintenance costs.

A seat of Gunnison County, Gunnison has a long history as a trade center for many smaller communities in the surrounding area. Though Gunnison was originally a ranching and mining town, it now depends greatly on tourism and education to sustain its economy. Tourism accounts for roughly $35 million annually, with education bringing in $26 million. Ranching accounts for about another $8 million. Gunnison boasts that the sun shines almost every day, but due to its valley location, it gets extremely cold in the winter. In fact, Gunnison has occasionally recorded the coldest temperatures in the nation. The average temperatures in town are several degrees below nearby towns such as Crested Butte, which is at a higher elevation, but is nestled against the protective mountainside. The Gunnison River was once the mightiest force within several thousand square miles of Colorado. This river has carved some of the most spectacular rock canyons in the world, on it's way west to the Colorado River. The Black Canyon of the Gunnison was considered impassible until the railroad was built. Of course, today, much of the Gunnison valley lies under the impounded waters of Blue Mesa Reservoir.
