The English name That Pynt derives from the Oceana name, which is a loanword from Dutch punt ("point"). Originally, the Oshenna pronunciation was /tʰat 'pʌnt/, which is still reflected in the English pronunciation, as well as the Oceana spelling. However, under influence of the native Oceana word punkt (/pyŋ(k)t/; "point"), the vowel quality shifted to /y/. In English, the stress changed from the second word to the first word, which is a develop that is being taken over in the Oceana language. More recently, especially locals (people living in or near the area) are corrupting the name to Thapynt in Oceana and Tappent in English.
