- The 2012-13 season was Town's eleventh consecutive season in the second tier of English football. Town started the season under Paul Jewell, but after only accumulating seven points after 13 league games and languishing in 24th place, Jewell was sacked and replaced by Mick McCarthy. McCarthy guided Town to 14th place with 60 points, six points clear of relegation. Town were knocked out of the League Cup by lower-league Carlisle United in the second round. They fell at the first hurdle in the FA Cup, losing at first tier side Aston Villa in the third round.
