| - Deafened creatures are able to make successful listen checks, despite the apparent contradiction.
- Deaf is a negative status effect. It prevents characters from "hearing", and hence reacting to, orders given to them by the player. Affected characters will start to "do their own thing" according to their AI level and script. Affected enemy creatures are put into disarray, unable to execute strategies and cooperate. Deafened creatures will also fail to detect by sound and automatically fail any listening checks. When a deafened character is selected, sounds and music will be muted.
- A monster is deaf when its deaf flag (as THINGS lump 3 or Hexen flag 3) is set. Monsters are normally alerted when they hear the player attack, even with the silent fist. Deaf monsters are not alerted by player sounds and remain dormant until they see the player or receive damage. Deaf monsters are often placed just inside doorways or around corners to ambush unsuspecting players. The player may have cleared the room of all visible enemies, but the deaf monsters will still be lying in wait since they didn't hear the preceding firefight.
- deaf (n) the state of being cool, dope, or fly, especially in relation to music
