Mexico joined the International Ice Hockey Federation in April 1985. They played its first game in 2000 during the 2000 World Championships, losing to Belgium 5–0. Since then they have participated in every World Championship and are currently in division II after finishing fifth in the group A tournament, which was held in Mexico. It is the only Latin American team that competes in the IIHF tournament. Mexico hosted the Pan American Ice Hockey Tournament in 2014 and in 2015. The national team was runner-up in both of them.
