At some point, the Mysterious Traveller had presumably travelled to the Misery Zone, although it is unknown how. There, he was able to find the "deadliest monster" in the Zone and arranged to use him in a plot against the Freedom Fighters. Doctor Ivo Robotnik then created the Inter-Zone Exchanger, a device programmed to allow the monster to switch places with whoever stepped on it.

Doctor Ivo Robotnik then created the Inter-Zone Exchanger, a device programmed to allow the monster to switch places with whoever stepped on it. In the Emerald Hill Zone, the Mysterious Traveller tricked Tails into believing that stepping on the device would grant him "mega-coolness beyond belief". Upon leaping onto it, Tails was sucked into the Misery Zone and was instantly replaced by the monster. It quickly worked on obliterating the Emerald Hill Zone, using its "polluto-breath" to torch the greenery. The monster lived up to its nickname of "the unbeatable foe", its armour proving almost completely invulnerable to Sonic's Spin Attack. After knocking Sonic to one side, the monster attempted to ignore the hero and continued to burn the forests, the Mysterious Traveller confirming that the monster "exists only to destroy". The monster swatted Sonic aside once more but was surprisingly knocked over by a full-power Spin Attack. However, the beast soon recovered and turned all its intentions towards beating the hedgehog. Unable to defeat it, Sonic decided to banish the monster by throwing the Inter-Zone exchanger at it. The furious monster was ordered to unleash its "Apocalypse Blast", aiming to wipe out the Zone completely. Unfortunately for him, this suicidal move did not appear until he had been teleported back to the Misery Zone. Confused, he accidentally wiped out his home and all monsters, including himself.
