| - New Irkutsk (Russian: Новый Иркутск, Novy Irkutsk), formally known as the Governorate of New Irkutsk (Новоиркутская губерния, Novoirkutskaya guberniya), is one of the governorates of Alaska. The Governorate of New Irkustsk (Russian: Новоиркутская губерния, Novoirkutskaya guberniya), commonly known as New Irkutsk (Новый Иркутск, Novyy Irkutsk), is a governorate of the Alaskan Democratic Federative Republic. Originally disputed territory between Kenai and Shelikof, New Irkutsk was formed in the 1940s as a compromise government to act as a buffer state between the two governorates. Despite its modern day origins, the region began to develop after the discovery of gold, leading to an influx of prospectors into the area. The mining settlement quickly evolved into city of Furugelmsk (named after the Furuhjelm family). The governorate was named after the Russian city Irkutsk (the historic center of the Russian-American Company prior to New Archangel), and the region as a whole was historically known as New Siberia prior to the 20th century.
