The mining settlement quickly evolved into city of Furugelmsk (named after the Furuhjelm family). The governorate was named after the Russian city Irkutsk (the historic center of the Russian-American Company prior to New Archangel), and the region as a whole was historically known as New Siberia prior to the 20th century.
