Originally a loyal follower of the New Order, Zahn joined the Army thinking he would be bringing stability, keeping peace, and fighting terrorists; protecting the galaxy. However, as he witnessed many crimes being committed by the Galactic Empire throughout his career during the early reign of the Empire, as well as the Galactic Civil War, he grew more and more disillusioned. By the time of the Battle of Endor, he was thinking of defecting, but had some doubts. Zahn and several other comrades of his defected to the New Republic in late 4 ABY. Given the rank of lieutenant in the New Republic Army for his military experience, Zahn continued fighting in the civil war—but this time, on the side of the Republic. During this time, he served as an aide to General Tyr Taskeen. In 7 ABY, he was promoted to captain, and in 9 ABY, after fighting against Grand Admiral Thrawn, Zahn was promoted to major. With that rank, he was appointed as the commander of an infantry battalion. Zahn and his unit saw action in several more campaigns leading up to the Yuuzhan Vong War, by which he was promoted to colonel. Shortly before the war began, Zahn was given command of the 47th Republican Guard Assault Division, a formation of hardened infantrymen, most of them having fought in the Galactic Civil War. During the conflict with the Vong, Zahn and his unit fought on several fronts, and took part in both the failed defense and later liberation of Coruscant. After the war, he was promoted to general in the new Galactic Federation of Free Alliances. However, as he continued serving, Zahn noticed that many of the problems he witnessed in the Empire were beginning to arise in the Alliance. This disturbed him greatly, and he felt aligned more with the New Jedi Order than the government. He retired in 34 ABY, but continued serving as an unofficial advisor from time to time. After leaving the Alliance's service, Zahn became an official in the republican government of his homeworld, in which he held the post of minister of defense. As the head of the planet's military forces, he organized them into the Nigel Defense Force, which eventually was integrated as a planetary unit of of the Galactic Alliance Army. Zahn retired in 44 ABY, and lived in isolation in one of the more remote provinces of Nigel VI. He died in 54 ABY at the age of 84 standard years old.
