abstract
| - The 1996 Atlantic hurricane season officially began June 1, 1996, and lasted until November 30, 1996. These dates conventially delimit the period of each year when most tropical cyclones form in the Atlantic basin. The season was a very active one, with 13 named storms forming during the season, as well as 9 hurricanes, and 6 major hurricanes. Notable storms of the season include Hurricane Bertha, which struck near Wilmington, North Carolina in July as a Category 2 hurricane with 100 mph winds. Hurricane Cesar, though only a Category 1 hurricane, Cesar killed at least 51 people in South America and Central America, due to flooding it caused over the mountainous terrain of South America and Central America. The next notable storm of the season was Hurricane Fran, which caused an estimated $3.2 billion in damage, mainly in North Carolina, where it struck as a Category 3 hurricane. The last notable storm of the season was Hurricane Hortense, which produced widespread flooding in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, and it also later grazed Nova Scotia.
- The 1996 Atlantic hurricane season began on June 1st, 1996 and ended November 30th, 1996.
