- Advantages in the Legend of the Five Rings Roleplaying Game represent things that cannot be represented by skills, traits or other aspects of a character. Some are "inherent" and must be purchased during character creation, others are "granted" and must have role playing circumstances to be able to be gotten. Other advantages can be purchased at any time as long as they are warranted and the player has the experience points to spend. Advantages are mostly used to develop and enhance a character, adding to their backstory or personality.

- In GURPS an Advantage is a trait which provides access to a power or ability. Advantages often do not have a Success Roll associated with them though some do—such as Warp. Advantages cost Character Points, and a single point cost advantage is called a perk. Most advantages cost roughly between 10 and 20 points. Though some particularly useful advantages such as Unkillable or Supernatural Durability cost over 100 points. The precise cost of an advantage can be manipulated by using Enhancements and Limitations. Some advantages are leveled, such as Damage Reduction and Night Vision.

- Rona frowns. "House Vandrake is the most likely. They were closely allied to the Goldfoots. But Damrosch and Taggard are also weak."
- "What other lands might we be able to conquer?"
- "For a ten year winter?" Groat asks rhetorically. "We would do better to expand. Without Goldfoot protection, House Vandrake is vulnerable."
- "A weak lord cannot protect his people. I must take those houses to save their smallfolk."
- "We will conquer House Vandrake. We must make sure we survive the winter."
- "If I continue to take other holdings, won't I be seen as a tyrant?"
- "Maester Lucas is right. I don't want to attack any other bannermen."
- "Maester Lucas is right. I have risen higher than I ever hoped. I need no more holdings."
- "I must take these weak houses to protect their smallfolk. They'll be safe under my rule."
- "Indeed. We succeeded without drawing [Your Liege Lord]'s attention, but that can't last. Another attack will bring all the [Your Region] down on us."
- "We've taken Thornspire and no protest from [Your Liege Lord]," Groat says triumphantly. "Now we must press our advantage. Where shall we expand next?"
- "Is Thornspire not sufficient to meet our needs for the winter?"
